The honest answer is that American Mahjong caps itself. Four players sit at a table, so groups scale in fours. A single table handles up to six people comfortably — four play while two watch a hand and rotate in, which is genuinely useful, because watching a hand from over someone's shoulder teaches you things playing your own hand doesn't.

Beyond six, you want a second table. The double-table booking runs three hours instead of two and a half and covers up to ten players.

They're the same instruction; the difference is who's at the table. A "private" booking is your own closed group, which is what nearly everyone wants. A group lesson simply means a larger closed group — friends, neighbors, coworkers — spread across one or two tables.
