Mahjong Lessons in Summerlin, Las Vegas

By Jessica Gitlin — Las Vegas's favorite Mahjong teacher

Vegas Mahjong Lessons · Taught on the official NMJL card

The usual Summerlin booking is a group where nobody has played before. That is the normal starting point, not the exception.

Quick Answer

Mahjong lessons in Summerlin are private American Mahjong sessions taught at your own address by Jessica Gitlin, who brings a complete 152-tile set, racks, dice and mats. One table seats four players and covers up to 6 guests for $200 over 2.5 hours; two tables cover up to 10 for $400 over 3 hours. No guest needs prior experience or equipment, and lessons are taught on the current National Mah Jongg League card. Call or text 917-533-8690 to book a date.

Where Summerlin games actually happen

Three rooms account for most of it. Someone's dining table, because it is already the right size and the light is good. A village clubhouse, because the HOA room seats three tables without anyone moving furniture. Or a country club dining room at Red Rock Country Club or TPC Summerlin, usually because a group has outgrown the first two.

Lessons are taught throughout Summerlin, including The Ridges, The Summit, Mountain Trails, Summerlin West, Red Rock Country Club and TPC Summerlin. The west side is far enough from the Strip that a standing game is easier to keep going than a night out.

Getting through the gate

Most of Summerlin's villages are guard-gated, and this is the one logistical detail worth handling in advance rather than at 6:55 on the night. Add Jessica Gitlin to your guest list when you book. Guards in Summerlin turn away un-listed vehicles as a matter of course, and a lesson that starts twenty minutes late is a lesson that ends before anyone finishes a hand.

Everything else is the same as any other address in the Valley.

What fits in which room

WhereTypical groupWhat to plan for
Dining or kitchen table4-6Everyone must reach the center. Clear the surface completely.
Living room, card table brought in4-6Chair clearance on all four sides. Card table and chairs available if needed.
Village clubhouse or HOA room8-12Reserve the room for 3 hours, not 2. Setup and breakdown are real.

Floor space decides the table count, not the guest list. A room that holds twenty standing guests often holds two playing tables.

We booked Jessica for my wife's birthday party at our home in The Ridges. It was the highlight. She has a real talent for teaching complex rules in a simple way. — Amanda K., Summerlin

Most groups book a second session before the first one ends. That is how the standing games start.

What the first session covers

  1. The tiles, about fifteen minutes. Craks, Bams and Dots, the Winds and Dragons, the eight Jokers and eight Flowers.
  2. The card, about fifteen minutes. How to read the current National Mah Jongg League card and choose a hand to chase.
  3. The Charleston. Right, across, left. The pass that makes the American game social rather than solitary.
  4. Real hands. The rest of the session is live play with coaching at the table, so nobody sits there lost.

Which format to book

If it is your own house and your own friends, the in-home lesson is the default. If you want to learn properly rather than as party entertainment, read private American Mahjong lessons. If the evening is really a party with a game in the middle of it, the girls night mahjong party page describes that version.
